Owner Objective

Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) was working to build a loop around Nashville. The southern portion was completed in 2012, but the northern portion involved widening and improving existing state and U.S. routes. One of those routes is SR 109, which ran right over the old green two-lane Cumberland River Bridge into the City of Gallatin, TN. While TDOT already had plans to replace the structurally deficient two-lane truss bridge, the project was fast-tracked and construction on this $29.6 million project began. Mountains States Contractors was awarded the project as the prime contractor, with Britton Bridge as the structural steel erection subcontractor and Civil & Environmental Consultants (CEC) as the subconsultant for construction staking, environmental and Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) Services. The project included the construction of the new 1,800 foot SR 109 Gateway Bridge over the Cumberland River, a new shorter bridge over part of Old Hickory Lake, two miles of 5-lane roadway reconstruction, a retaining wall, grading and utility relocation.

CEC Approach

CEC performed the preliminary survey and design of one traffic change and the realignment and widening of Odom’s Bend Road. CEC was also responsible for all construction staking on the project.
