Owner Objective
The Boroughs of Edgewood and Swissvale in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, were jointly awarded a Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grant to perform bicycle and pedestrian mobility improvements along a heavily traveled two-mile stretch of South Braddock Avenue, which also happens to be the municipal divide of these two neighborhoods.
CEC Approach
The Boroughs engaged CEC to provide civil engineering, survey, and traffic services for this project. CEC’s design includes upgrading curb ramps to meet ADA and PennDOT guidelines, the installation of high-visibility colored concrete crosswalks, new pedestrian signal heads, and curb extensions with rectangular rapid flashing beacons within the Regent Square section of the corridor.
CEC compiled a diverse team of design professionals to approach the project’s design challenges with buildable solutions. The team’s ability to work seamlessly with the Boroughs, the local PennDOT District, and the public will result in pedestrian and bicycle mobility improvements that react to the issues throughout the corridor that were identified by all parties. CEC also performed a pedestrian study at a key intersection in Regent Square to respond to the community’s desire to install a crosswalk where one currently does not exist. CEC traffic engineers determined that the crosswalk could be installed to meet safety guidance, and developed 3-dimensional renderings of the proposed conditions to gain public support for the design.
